French 75

NYE 2020 was kicked off in weird COVID-era style by a couple of French 75 cocktails, which most definitely packed a punch. Created in the 1920’s and named after a WW1 french field gun (!) this is a remarkably refreshing drink for something so boozy, and led to a very giggly Zoom call with some wonderful friends. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2021!

Ingredients

Per person:

50ml gin

15ml lemon juice

5ml sugar syrup

Champagne/Prosecco

Method

  1. Fling the gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice.
  2. Wrap in a tea towel and shake like crazy, then strain into a flute or coupe glass and top up with the fizz of your choice.
  3. Make it really flash by then peeling a strip of lemon zest and twisting it into the glass for extra zing. I’d run out of lemons at this point, so couldn’t do that this time.
